Horsham Library Volunteer Corps

Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks and activities.

Here are some of the ways volunteers can help:

• Shelving books, magazines and a-v materials that have been returned
• Leading book discussion groups
• Providing “hospitality” in the Café (re-stocking the book sale shelf, chatting with customers, busing tables, putting up notices and announcements)
• Putting book jackets, pockets and labels on new books and mending torn pages, twisted cassette tapes, and other minor damage
• Helping the children’s librarian during story hours and after-school programs
• Being a leader/mentor for after school programs (such as chess club) or presenting a program on a topic you know well (such as a travelogue, a workshop on investing, a gardening program, you name it).
• Putting up exhibits and displays; recruiting exhibits from individuals and organizations in the community

Special volunteer opportunity
Summer Reading Club Registration Station, mid-June through the third week of August, 2010.

The library needs volunteers for the Summer Reading Club Registration Station to be set up in the Café. Throughout the summer families will visit the registration station to join the Summer Reading Club, get their reading calendars stamped, choose their weekly incentive prizes, and receive their raffle tickets for the big prize drawings to be held at the end of the summer.

We would like to recruit one or two people to cover the station in shifts of 1-2 hours during the library day especially during summer events when library staff is busy running programs and checking books in and out.

We are looking for people who would like to take part in the fun of Summer Reading Club and who can offer time throughout the 8-week Summer Reading Club that begins mid-June. Training for volunteers will be held in early June. We are especially looking for:

• High school students interested in completing community service for school.
• Members of the Friends of the Horsham Library. It's a great way to take an active part in the Summer Reading Club and see your hard work and funding in action. It's also a great opportunity to recruit members to the Friends of the Horsham Library!
• Any other community members interested in helping out at the library!

How To Volunteer

Anyone can volunteer. (Children under the age of 14 should get permission from their parents and may be asked to volunteer during a time period when another adult volunteer or staff person can easily supervise.)

People interested in volunteering can contact Circulation Supervisor Stephanie McKenna by email at smckenna@mclinc.org or by calling the library at 215-443-2609. Please leave your name, a way of getting in touch with you (home phone number and/or email address), and tell us a little about yourself (are you a student, a retiree, an adult with a special area of expertise, etc.)

People may also volunteer if they have community service hours to complete as part of a court order. Please let us know what jurisdiction has imposed the community service requirement (give us a contact name, telephone, and address for someone who is supervising your hours), tell us how many hours you must complete, and what the deadline for completion is.
