Science in the Summer is a hands-on science program underwritten by GlaxoSmithKline.
Participating public libraries in the Delaware Valley, including the Horsham Township Library, offer Science in the Summer to encourage elementary school age children to enjoy learning about basic science concepts. That way, children may be motivated to continue to learn about science, to take science courses in higher grades, and eventually to pursue careers in science and technology.
The subject of the 2012 Science in the Summer program will be "Simple Machines," a program that teaches children the basic principles of physics, using levers, pulleys and other basic tools of force and work. Horsham Township Library will hold its program during the last week of June 2012: Monday, June 25 through Thursday, June 28.
All children must be pre-registered to attend Science in the Summer classes. Registration will be taken between April 23 and May 18. Parents must register their child in person at the library. Names will be placed in a lottery. Participants will be selected after May 18. Participants will be notified by May 25.
Children who participate in Science in the Summer programs learn about the scientific method of inquiry and drawing conclusions based on evidence. They learn the importance of safety and how to take safety precautions in a lab setting and at home. They also learn how to use library resources to explore interesting topics on their own. On the last day of classes, teachers will distribute certificates and congratulate students who participated in Science in the Summer.
Level 1 classes, for children entering second and third grades, will be held from 2 to 2:45 PM. Level 2 classes, for children entering fourth through sixth grades, will be held from 3:15 to 4 PM. Space will be limited to 32 participants.
For further information, telephone the library's children's department at (215) 443-2609, ext. 204.
The library is recruiting two or three volunteers to help the Science in the Summer teacher during the Science in the Summer classes. Volunteers may be teens or adults and should be interested in working with children ages seven through twelve. Volunteers will help the teacher set up, help children carry out class activities, and will help the teacher organize and pack up materials on the last class day. Volunteers should be available Monday, June 25 through Thursday, June 28 from 12:30 PM through 4 PM. To volunteer please telephone the library at (215) 443-2609, ext. 206 and speak with or email Children's Librarian Ellyn Benner or Library Director Laurie Tynan.
