World War I History Talk Poster

A century ago, the United States declared war on Germany and joined the great world-wide conflagration that we know today as World War I.

Explore the beginnings of the conflict and the ways in which America attempted to deal with the warring powers.  We'll look at the people and ideas involved on both sides of the Atlantic, how war finally came to America and the threads of the war's history that still run through today's world.

Presented by John Shephard.

John Shepherd is a retired Army officer and system engineer with a lifetime interest in military history.  He half-jokingly describes himself as both a student of and participant in military history. Since 2007, he has been an instructor at Delaware Valley University’s Center for Learning in Retirement.

The courses he has taught include "War, A Citizen’s Guide", a general survey of military history; "War in the Twentieth Century"; "Revolutions in the Mid-East", a near-real-time survey of the 2011 Arab Spring; "Defense Policy of the United States", a review of the tools and constitutional means for building and using military power; "The American Circus", a interesting and unusual departure from his usual subject; and for the past two years "World War I", a history of the Great War and its impact upon the world we live in today. He holds a B.A. in International Relations from Lehigh University and is a member of the Society for Military History.
