School Summer Reading Lists

Reading during summer vacation is a great way for students to practice reading skills on books they enjoy. Studies show that summer readers maintain reading skill levels from one grade to the next, instead of "back-sliding" over the summer months and having to spend time catching up in September.

Most schools recommend, and some require that students read some or all of the books on a list developed by the school district.

Hatboro-Horsham School District distributes a Required Summer Reading List for its high school students. All students are required to read books associated with the particular English class they will attend the following year. On the first Friday following resumption of school in September, all students take a summer reading test which accounts for 10% of their first quarter grade.

Horsham Township Library makes every effort to supply copies of the books on its school district's required reading list. We recommend that you don't wait until the end of August to seek out these books. Check them out or put in reserve requests for them by mid-summer so that you will be able to fulfill your summer reading requirement by Labor Day.

To help students and parents identify the books required by their school, the library is happy to post on its website any summer reading books lists local schools are willing to share. If you are a teacher responsible for reading or curriculum development at an area public, private, or parochial school and would like the library to post your reading list, simply email a copy in electronic format (a .TXT, .RTF, .DOC, or .PDF file is appreciated) to Laurie Tynan, Library Director, Horsham Township Library. Please include the name of your school in the body of your email message. We will gladly post your reading list.
