Gifts of Books and Recordings

The library welcomes gifts of books, cassettes, compact discs, and DVDs if they are in good condition (gently used).

The library evaluates donated items to see if they would be useful to the collection. If not, the library reserves the right to dispose of donations appropriately. Some items may be sold via the library's booksale while others may be given to organizations that can use the materials. Booksale revenue is used to purchase new books for the library's collection.

Individuals or businesses may be able to deduct donations of books and other materials on their Federal Income Tax returns. Internal Revenue Service rules prohibit the library from appraising items donated to it; however, the library is happy to give donors a letter acknowledging the gift. See the IRS Publication #561 Determining the Value of Donated Property for information about establishing the value of donated items.

The library will not accept donations of books or magazines that have been exposed to water or mildew, since these items can introduce mold and mildew into the rest of the collection.

Items that may be useful to the library:   The library regrets it will not accept the following items:
  • Children's picture books
  • Children's fiction & non-fiction
  • Adult hardcover fiction
  • Adult hardcover non-fiction
