You Are Here @ the Horsham Township Library
Teen Summer Reading Club

June 13 through August 5, 2011.

Register beginning Monday, June 13 and receive your "You Are Here" Reading Record Packet. Keep track of all the reading you do between June 13th and August 5th. Read whatever you like - the choice is yours!

Follow the instructions on your Reading Record for chances to win small prizes from the "One World, Many Prizes" Bin and raffle tickets for the Big Prize Drawing.

Be here this summer with the following activities at the library:

Writer's workshop | You are Here.

Here's a chance for teen writers to hone their writing skills. Sessions include writing time, sharing & networking. Participants should bring laptops or notebooks to write in. Every Tuesday 3:30-5 PM beginning June 21 (no meeting June 28). For teens in grades 8-12.

SCRATCH

Scratch is a programming language created by MIT to help young programmers create their own interactive stories, simple video games and animations. Share your code with teens in other communities via the MIT Scratch website.

Please register in advance for this workshop: the library only has ten laptops, so class size is limited to give each participant a laptop to use. If you can bring a laptop from home, please let us know when you register. That can allow us to increase the class size. This program is for teens in grades 6 and up.

Two beginner's workshops will be held; please only sign up for one:
  • Session 1: July 19, 20, 21 and 22 from 1:30 to 3 PM
  • Session 2: July 26, 27, 28 and 29 from 1:30 to 3 PM

  • If you took this workshop last summer, you can sign up for the advanced workshop:
    July 6, 7 and 8 from 1:30 to 3 PM
To sign up call Teen Librarian Barbara Svoboda at (215) 443-2609 ext. 202 or email her at bsvoboda@mclinc.org.

GEOCACHING | YOU ARE HERE

Learn how to use a GPS tracking unit and join the fun as we wander outside to find stashed treasures. Time and date to be announced. Watch this space for details.

GEO-JEOPARDY | WHERE IS HERE?

Each Monday beginning June 13, a new set of Jeopardy answers will be displayed in the Teen Room. To play, write down the questions to the answers on the supplied Jeopardy scorecard. Turn in your scorecard to receive a raffle ticket. Teen librarian Barbara Svoboda will keep the scorecards all summer, tally up all the cards from the entire summer, and award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes to the three teens who answer the most correct questions. Geo-Jeopardy will go on throughout the Summer Reading Program - June 13 through August 5. You can work on the game any time you come to the library.

SLIPPED STITCHERS | KNITTING GUERILLAS - WHO WAS HERE?!

The knitting group is open to all ages 8 to 80 and will run weekly throughout the summer, from 7 to 8:30 PM. For dates, click here. This summer, some members will be knitting creations to add to the Jarrett Nature Center.

TEEN GAME NIGHT | ALWAYS HERE!

Game Night is open to teens in 6th - 12th grades. Teen-rated Wii games and board games will be available. Free pizza provided by Tonelli's. 5 to 8:30 PM on Friday June 10th, July 15th and August 12th.

TEENS TOP TEN | FAVORITE BOOKS HERE!

A bookmark with all of the Teens Top Ten nominees is in your Teen Summer Reading registration packet. These are books that teens in 15 library groups around the country have voted their favorites. Read as many as you like this summer, then you can vote on your favorites online between August 22 and September 16 at www.ala.org/teenstopten.

The Teen Summer Reading Program is made possible through the generosity of the Friends of the Horsham Library.
